What does the school do to keep students safe online and in digital spaces?
Concordia Academy keeps students safe online and in digital spaces by adopting strong privacy practices and clear technology guidelines. We protect personal information with secure, encrypted systems and do not share or sell student data. Cell phone use is carefully managed: phones are stored during class and only allowed during passing times, helping reduce distractions and promote healthy habits. Additionally, filtering software blocks access to inappropriate or dangerous sites, and monitoring software alerts counseling staff and administration if online activity raises safety or mental health concerns. We also encourage digital responsibility through staff guidance and support.
-
What does the school do to teach and enforce responsible tech use?
Concordia Academy teaches and enforces responsible tech use through a clear cell phone policy: phones are not allowed during class time or lunch, and use is permitted only before school, after school, and during passing periods. Misuse can lead to confiscation and fines. Additionally, responsible technology use, including appropriate use of AI, is integrated throughout the curriculum and emphasized in assemblies. Digital literacy is a key part of the Freshman Seminar class, and students also develop 21st-century skills in hands-on settings like the ICE Lab, where they work with advanced equipment under teacher guidance. This approach supports focus, creativity, and healthy tech habits for all students.
-
How much screen time do students have during the school day?
Students have limited screen time during the school day to support focus and well-being. Cell phones are not used during class or lunch periods and must be put away in holders during lessons, though they can be used before school, after school, and during passing times between classes. This policy helps reduce distractions and supports mental health, following research on the impact of screen time on teens. In addition to technology, the school continues to use traditional learning tools such as textbooks, articles, and hands-on manipulatives. For hands-on learning, students use school laptops and have access to technology like 3D printers in specialized labs during class time.
-
Are there parent workshops on how to manage kids’ screen time and tech use at home?
While we do not have regularly scheduled parent workshops specifically on managing kids’ screen time and tech use at home, we have offered special sessions on this and related topics in the past. We recognize this is an important concern across all ages. For families with teens, we recommend resources like the book The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, which discusses the impact of smartphones on youth mental health. At school, cell phone use is carefully managed to support focus and well-being, with phones allowed only during passing times, but not in class or during study halls.
For ongoing support, parents can connect through community prayer groups or reach out to our guidance team for personalized strategies. Staying engaged with your teen’s digital habits alongside these supports can help create a healthy balance at home and school.
