Sophomore Year

As sophomore year approaches, your teen is likely becoming more comfortable juggling an intensive course load, co-curriculars, athletics, and other interests.

As a parent watching your teen approach the season of college searches and completing applications, you’re wishing time would slow down just a bit. You might be worried about whether they’re prepared academically, about outside influences, and if they’ll hold on to the values you’ve worked so hard to instill in them.

At Concordia Academy, sophomore year is an academically rigorous one that also marks the continuation of laying a solid foundation for college prep. Students here are known, valued, and supported by their teachers, friends, and community, as they begin to further explore their interests and possible career paths.

CA sophomores move on to junior year with solid study habits, the confidence that they can handle challenging academics, a good idea about what most interests them, and the poise that comes with being noticed and included in the CA community. If you’re ready to know more about the CA sophomore experience, please contact our admissions team to schedule a tour.

About Concordia’s Sophomore Experience

Rigorous Academics

Challenging college preparatory academics offer engaging conversations, hands-on learning, and unique experiences, all framed in the context of Christian faith. Sophomores looking for more advanced coursework can choose Honors English, Honors Chemistry,  and Honors Biology options. Students with learning differences will find academic support and self-advocacy skills in our Resource Room.

Exploring Interests

Sophomores can pursue passions and investigate new areas of interest as they choose from a variety of electives, including art classes, Photojournalism, Engineering and Robotics, and Entrepreneurship. Through student clubs and organizations, students engage in different activities, taking on responsibilities and honing their skills.

Team Sports

CA student athletes compete in 17 sports, which in past years have included state tournament appearances for volleyball, boys basketball, girls basketball, softball, track, and dance, and taking home state championships in volleyball and individual state awards in track.

Student Ambassadors

CA sophomores are honored to be Student Ambassadors, representing the student body through interactions with potential students, families, and supporters of the school. Nominated by their teachers, Student Ambassadors are campus leaders who are respected within the Concordia community.

Exploration Outside the Classroom

Depending on a sophomore’s course selection, some lessons extend outside the classroom.  Advanced P.E. students enjoy outings to play golf and go bowling, while orchestra students enjoy a performance at Orchestra Hall.

College and Career Prep: Sophomore Year

Concordia freshmen gain a solid understanding of their areas of interest and possible career paths through the help of assessments, while sophomores continue building on that exploration.

Our dedicated guidance counselors meet with sophomores to work on course selection, college exploration, preparation for upcoming standardized testing, resume tips, and social and emotional skill development.

Concordia Cohorts

Sophomore year is when CA students really start considering Concordia Cohorts — Emerging Artists, STEM, or Humanities — advanced programs of study that align with their goals and interests. Sophomores are encouraged to participate in Cohort Conversations, a time when students hear from experts in subject areas relevant to their cohort of interest.

College on Campus

Starting junior year, students have access to over 100 credits through 25 college classes taught on campus and in-person by professors who travel to CA daily, allowing students to earn college credit while remaining in their familiar close-knit community.
