DEPARTMENT PURPOSE
Computer education includes instructional programs for students according to their needs and interests. The disciplines include Office Essentials, and electives in business applications, digital imaging, web design and video production and editing.

Competency in word processing and mastery of the keyboard are important in a student's personal, academic, and professional lives. Advanced electives develop individual skills in applications used in business and personal life. Throughout the courses, the ethical use of computers and intellectual property will be stressed.

CONCEPT LEVEL LEARNER OUTCOMES:
The students will:

  1. 1. demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to formulate questions, as well as access data from various sources.
  2. 2. use information technology to solve problems, improve efficiency, and communicate more effectively.
  3. 3. develop a proficiency in the use of digitized media.

Office Essentials. (Grades 9-12) This course is an introduction to using the computer as a tool for obtaining, synthesizing, and presenting information. This course offers students a chance to become proficient in the following Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Students will acquire and come to appreciate the skills necessary to use these applications as a communication tool in their personal lives, education, and future careers. (One quarter, .5 credit)

Advanced Computer Applications (ACA) I: Office Essentials. (Grades 10-12) (Grades 10-12) Advanced Computer Applications I gives students hands-on experience on the Macintosh computer. The focus is on learning desktop publishing, digital

imaging, and web design as they are used in personal life and the business world. Students will learn how to work with digital imaging and how to create effective and interesting web pages. To accomplish this, students will work with scanners and digital cameras, edit digital images with PhotoShop, and use HTML code and an HTML web-editor. (Prerequisite: Office Essentials or Keyboarding. One quarter, .5 credit)

Advanced Computer Applications (ACA) II: Digital Media and Web Design. (Grades 10-12) Advanced Computer Applications II gives students hands-on experience with video production and editing. Students will create and edit movies using iMovie and Final Cut Express (advanced program). This course covers all the basics from initial capture of digital content to final output to tape or DVD. Students will learn to master the various trimming tools in iMovie and Final Cut Express, as well as how to add effects, transitions, music, titles, and narration to their video programs. (Prerequisite: ACA I. One quarter, .5 credit)

Accounting. (Grades 11-12) This course defines accounting objectives and their relation to business. The student will learn the fundamentals of accounting and the accounting cycle as well as how to analyze business transactions and properly record the entriesto journals and then post to ledgers. Special emphasis will also be given on how to create financial statements that are essential for business. (One semester, 1 credit)
